On 13 January, we will be in Iglesias, a beautiful city rich in history and, of course, churches, with a sacred programme partly related to Christmas just past and a second part entirely dedicated to Mariano Garau (1952), a Sardinian composer who is highly regarded and performed both nationally and internationally.
𝐒𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐦𝐨 𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐮𝐭i 𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐥𝐢̀, 𝐨𝐜𝐜𝐡𝐢 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐮𝐬𝐢, 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢 𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐨 𝐝𝐞𝐠𝐥𝐢 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐢.
Because it is a rare privilege to be able to witness a performance of such refinement and unusual craftsmanship.
For us, spectators far from being connoisseurs of choral music, their vocalisations revealed themselves without giving us a way to interpret them, woven into a timeless texture, yet familiar as if they had always been part of the unchanging flow of our lives.
Ethereal choirs, amplified by the sacred reverberation in the aisles of our Church of St. Francis, which must have collected and preserved so many voices of joy and sorrow from its ancient construction to the present day.
And perhaps, in this ability to be outside of time and yet so intrinsically part of it, lies the only degree of understanding we have been able to give to their performance.
𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐞́ 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐨 𝐜𝐡𝐞 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐨 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐨 𝐠𝐥𝐢 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢 𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐮𝐧'𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐢 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚, 𝐥 𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞'𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞 𝐬𝐢 𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐚 𝐢𝐧 𝐮𝐧 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐨 𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨, 𝐩𝐢𝐮̀ 𝐩𝐮𝐫𝐨 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐞, 𝐨 𝐬𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞 𝐩𝐢𝐮̀ 𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐮𝐨: 𝐜𝐢 𝐬𝐢 𝐚𝐩𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐳𝐚 𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐭𝐫𝐢 𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞 𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐳𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐢, 𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐨 𝐜𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐨 𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐨 𝐚 𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐥𝐚 𝐧𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚 𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐳𝐚.
In that absence, in that spontaneous surrender to sentiment, the evening flew by all too soon, leaving us with the wish that that indefiniteness would never find an end.
Many thanks to the Nuoro Vocal Complex and director Franca Floris
